The visa regime with the EU for Moldovan citizens may be abolished by this July, Rapporteur of the European Parliament for visa-free regime for the Republic of Moldova Tanja Fajon said in a news conference in Chisinau, quoted by IPN.
Tanja Fajon said they plan to vote on the relevant report in the parliamentary committee on February 12. If everything goes right they will vote on it as well at the plenary of the European Parliament in March.
“I think it will be a very good year for the Republic of Moldova, maybe a start of a European journey. As a Rapporteur of the European Parliament for visa-free regime for the Republic of Moldova, I have to say that Moldova was the first country of the Eastern Partnership, which has met all the benchmarks to end the visa-free regime. Therefore, I will recommend to the European Parliament to support the free movement of Moldovan citizens,” said Tanja Fajon, adding that the European Parliament will continue to monitor the implemented reforms.
In the same new conference, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca thanked for the efforts made to support the very intense pace in the process of taking decisions in the European Parliament so that the decision on the abolition of the visa requirements can be taken as soon as possible.
Tanja Fajon met with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Natalia Gherman and representatives of ministries. She said she got many reassurances that Moldova is really doing its utmost to secure the border and the travel documents and to meet all the necessary conditions. On February 1, the European official will travel to the Transnistrian region to meet with the local administration.
