The suspended chief of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office Viorel Morari was questioned as a suspect on four counts: abuse of power, falsification of public documents, illegal detention or arrest and intentional investigation of an innocent person. The Prosecutor General’s Office said that after the questioning, the prosecutor in charge of the case decided in favor of Morari’s arrest, IPN reports.
Viorel Morari is to be charged and a decision will be taken as to his remand detention. The alleged illegalities were committed in the case of brothers Igor and Adrian Borș, co-owners of the network of Vento gas stations, who were recently rehabilitated after it was concluded that in 2018 they were persecuted, arrested and dispossessed of property and illegally held accountable in a case started by order.
Among those who handled the case was the current acting head of the Anti-Drug Service of the Border Police, who in 2018 served as an investigation officer. He was already indicted for abuse of power, falsification of public documents, illegal detention or arrest and intentional investigation of an innocent person. A former anticorruption prosecutor and an investigation officer were also summoned for questioning.
Viorel Morari was arrested in January 2020 on charges of abuse of power, falsification of public documents and interference in prosecution. The case was sent to court one month later. Also then, the PGO announced that it started one more case against Morari, over unjust enrichment and laundering of considerable amounts of money by using his position.
Viorel Morari pleads not guilty. Until today, he was under judicial control.
