The suspended chief of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office Viorel Morari, who was arrested on January 19, was indicted for the fabrication of a case by order. He was charged on four counts and the prosecutors asked for 30 days in remand custody for him, IPN reports.
The Prosecutor General’s Office said Viorel Morari was charged with abuse of power, falsification of public documents, illegal detention or arrest and intentional investigation of an innocent person. The suspected illegalities were committed in the case of brothers Igor and Adrian Borș, co-owners of the network of Vento gas stations, who were recently rehabilitated after it was concluded that in 2018 they were persecuted, arrested and dispossessed of property and illegally held accountable in a case started by order.
One more person was arrested in this case. This is an employee of the Border Police, who in 2018 served as an investigation officer. Immediately after he received a citation from the Prosecutor’s Office, he was admitted to the hospital based on a certificate issued by the medical service of the Border Police. According to the doctor who supervises him, his state of health allows him to take part in procedural actions. Today he is to be questioned and charged.
Among those who handled the case was the current acting head of the Anti-Drug Service of the Border Police, who in 2018 also served as an investigation officer. He was indicted on the same four counts a week ago.
A former anticorruption prosecutor was also summoned for questioning, but he informed about his infection with COVID-19 on the very day he was to be questioned
Viorel Morari was arrested in January 2020 on charges of abuse of power, falsification of public documents and interference in prosecution. The case was sent to court one month later. Also then, the PGO announced that it started one more case against Morari, over unjust enrichment and laundering of considerable amounts of money by using his position.
Viorel Morari pleads not guilty. Until today, he was under judicial control.
