Viorel Morari about PGO’s work and Platon’s statements

The suspended chief of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office Viorel Morari said that even if he does not enjoy state guard, as Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo and Veaceslav Platon do, and even if he and his relatives risk being further persecuted, he will continue to fight the faults witnessed in the work of the prosecution service. Referring to Veaceslav Platon, Morari said it is now in fashion for persons who are suspected of particular offenses to speak instead of prosecutors, IPN reports.

Viorel Morari told a news conference that Veaceslav Platon spoke about his involvement in particular events in the social life, but these statements are aberrant. He presented an ordinance by which Platon is classed as an injured party to which damage of US$300 million was done. “So, Veaceslav Platon, in the case in which I am accused and which is tried in court, was classed as an injured party,” stated Viorel Morari, noting the ordinance is not argued.

According to him, recently Platon disseminated a letter addressed to the EU Delegation to Moldova, concerning the dallied investigation into the Laundromat even if he is presented as the architect of this scheme in the public sphere.

Viorel Morari also referred to the news conference given by the prosecutor general on December 1, saying that Alexandr Stoianoglo used only distorted information. According to him, the current administration of the PGO is unable to conduct the investigation into the banking fraud, while the prosecutor general lies when he says that he does not start criminal cases by order and does not exert influence. Inacceptable mistakes are made also in the criminal cases started against him and his relatives.

As to the prospector general’ assertion that  he cannot make Veaceslav Platon “shut up” when this reveals inquiry data, Viorel Morari said criminal liability is borne in such cases in accordance with the law.

He also accused the prosecutor general of not clarifying why Interpol didn’t agree to put Vlad Plahotniuc on the wanted list. The sending of requests for commissions rogatory in all the states is not an efficient solution for obtaining Plahotniuc’s extradition.

After Viorel Morari made these statements, the Prosecutor General’s Office reacted, saying the freedom of expression is a basic right that cannot be limited, including in the case of Veaceslav Platon and of Viorel Morari. It noted it will continue to make effort to investigate the cases in which the two are investigated, ensuring all their procedural rights are respected.

Viorel Morari was arrested in January 2020, being accused of abuse of power and interference in investigation. The case was sent to court in a month. Also then, the PGO announced that it instituted new criminal proceedings against Viorel Morari, over unjust enrichment and laundering of money in very large amounts by using his authority. Morari was freed from arrest and was placed under judicial control. He pleads not guilty.
