The director of the National Anticorruption Center (NAC) Viorel Chetraru denies any political subtext in the criminal case started against the head of the State Main Tax Inspectorate Nicolae Vicol. Asked in a news conference if this case is connected with the dispute between the PLDM and PDM, he said he regrets this unsuccessful association that is dangerous for the whole country, Info-Prim Neo reports. Viorel Chetraru also said that when he was named to the post he asked to be given a vote of confidence only if the political elite supported him in starting correctional activities against state functionaries. “This resistance and the misinterpretation of the actions we take are not what we wanted, but we expected something like this. We assume conscientiously all the effects of these activities because the persons involved are not ordinary persons, but high-ranking officials,” said Chetraru. According to him, the NAC is not interested in the political events taking place in the country as it has its own agenda, based on plans of action, and any interpretation can be regarded as intimidation of the officers. The Center already investigates several ministers and other officials holding responsible posts. The head of the Center’s Prosecution Division Bogdan Zumbreanu said the investigations into this case were launched last September after the Center was informed that officials of the Tax Inspectorate extorted €5,000 to €10,000 a month from companies for not inspecting them. According to Bogdan Zumbreanu, during the investigations it was established that a high-ranking official from the Inspectorate, using the capacities of former employees of the Center, tapped the phone of an employee of the Inspectorate in order to blackmail her later. Two current offices of the Center were involved in the tapping. They are now questioned by prosecutors. In the morning of February 15, the Center, in concert with prosecutors, carried out a number of inspections at the State Main Tax Inspectorate, at the offices and homes of persons involved in criminal cases, and at Nicolae Vicol’s home.
