Viorel Badea: First tranche of €100m assistance will be transferred in first quarter of this year

Romania is increasingly present in the Republic of Moldova, said Romanian senator Viorel Badea. According to him, the Romanian Government is determined to further support the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. The first tranche of the €100 million in non-reimbursable assistance will reach Chisinau soon. The money is to be used to modernize rural infrastructure in Moldova, IPN reports.

On February 11, 2022, there was signed an agreement on the implementation of a technical and financial assistance program between Moldova and Romania. Under this, the Romanian Government will offer €100 million in grant funding and the first €25 million will be transferred in the first quarter of this year.

“It goes to projects to the value of over €25 million as part of the European Village program that is designed to improve access to enhanced water supply and sewerage services for almost 100,000 citizens of the Republic of Moldova and to outfit 135 schools with physics, chemistry and biology laboratories. School buses and minibuses will be also bought. The first tranche will be allocated in the first quarter of this year. The documentation is being designed,” Viorel Badea stated in an interview with Radio Moldova.

Senator Viorel Badea also said that Romania will help the Republic of Moldova to fulfill the nine commitments undertaken when it was granted the EU candidate status. Romania will also help the official Chisinau to overcome the energy crisis caused by the war in Ukraine by providing electrical energy.

“Romania in these times of energy crisis committed itself to support the Republic of Moldova by supplying electrical energy. It also goes to €10.34 million in direct budget support for alleviating the effects of the energy crisis, which was already transferred to the Government in Chisinau. We are preparing in Parliament a bill that would encourage twinning between territorial-administrative units of the two states. Over the last few years, primarily in 2022, Romania has been increasingly present in the Republic of Moldova. This type of connection will definitely expand,” stated Viorel Badea.

Under the agreement between Moldova and Romania, the Romanian Government will allocate €100 million in non-reimbursable assistance over seven years. Moldova must make a financial contribution of at least 5% of the cost of each project.
