Violent students could be expelled from school

Students who will misbehave at school risk being suspended from the educational process or even expelled, including without the right to re-enroll later in the same institution. On Wednesday, the Cabinet approved relevant amendments to the Education Code, IPN reports.

The draft law stipulates penalties applicable to students depending on the seriousness of the offence and the degree of guilt. Students could be suspended for a limited period of time or even expelled. The suspension can be made for a maximum period of five working days. A student could be suspended for at most 15 working days during a school year.

Students may be expelled in case of acts of physical, psychological or verbal violence directed against mates, teachers or technical staff. The same applies to other very serious situations, when the presence of the student in the school constitutes a danger to the safety of peers or staff.

“We propose introducing in the Education Code those provisions regarding the educational institution’s internal regulations on penalties and rewards applicable to students. From our point of view, it is important that the school environment be a safe environment for everyone. The actions should also have consequences. To ensure predictability, regulations should be stipulated in the law, not at the level of a minister, as it is now,” said Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun.

The draft law to amend the Education Code is to be considered and passed by Parliament.
