Village schools still experience teacher shortage

Village schools still have to deal with a shortage of teachers, even though pedagogical universities are preparing enough specialists. The statement was made by Valentina Chicu, head of the pre-university education division of the Ministry of Education during the talk-show “ Place for Dialogue” on Radio Moldova, IPN reports.

According to Chicu, the main reason is that graduates of pedagogical colleges aren't motivated to work in village schools. “What we lack most in villages are physics and math teachers. If we analyze numbers, there are enough teachers in these fields, but it isn't attractive for them to work in villages”, said the official.

The head of the pre-university education division said that the current solution is to “borrow” teachers from the schools in nearby villages. “It's already something usual for a village teacher to commute to neighboring villages that lack didactic staff”, explained Chicu.

As regards the number of merged schools, Chicu said the total number isn't clear yet as the process will be finalized by the beginning of the new school year. She added that schools are ready for the new school year, with current repairs nearly finished, and capital repairs completed a while ago.

Igor Rosca, deputy head of the Botanica sector's education division, Chisinau Municipality, said during the same talk-show that there is a lot to do for Moldova to have quality education, given the lack of qualified staff and the tight budget, with the situation often saved by the financial contribution of parents' committees.
