Village mayor arrested for corruption

The Mayor of Ghetlova village, Orhei district, Oleg Stavila was arrested by the Fraud Investigation Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, on suspicion of bribe-taking. According to the Press Centre of MIA, the mayor, 41, was caught red-handed at the moment when he was receiving USD 100 from a resident of Cornesti village, Calarasi district. The sum of money had to determine the mayor to grant on lease 4 ponds located on the territory of Gheltova. Besides that, the mayor reportedly promised to get the go-ahead from the village councillors for the lease authorisation. According to the same source, Stavila holds the mayor’s office for five years, being re-elected on June 3. Criminal proceedings were initiated on charges of passive corruption. If the mayor is found guilty, he will face a fine of 5000 conventional units (1 unit = MDL 20) or imprisonment of 5 to10 years, in both cases being deprived of the right to hold public offices for a period of 2 to 5 years upon release.
