Victoria Nuland about Moldova: A government with which we could work is needed

The U.S. forcefully supports the wish of the Moldovan people to have responsible leaders who can together support a reform program and this is the best way of ensuring Moldova’s future, said U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland. In a news conference given after her visit to Bucharest, the official stated that Romania and the Unites States have programs to support the security sector in Moldova, as NATO has, but a government with which they could work to implement them is needed, IPN reports, quoting hotnews.ro.

Victoria Nuland said that Romania and the U.S. are partners in supporting Moldovans’ aspirations for a European and democratic country. “As you know, Moldova has gone through a governmental crisis during the past few months so that we work together with our partners to support the negotiations for a new government. Things show somehow better today in terms of the formation of a new parliamentary coalition for a pro-European government. So, we will powerfully support this thing,” stated the official.

Victoria Nuland noted that Moldova must restart the implementation of European-style reforms in the banking system, justice sector and financial system. “The new Moldovan government should resume the discussions with the IMF. We discussed today the immediate humanitarian assistance, the need to offer long-term political and economic support, and the cooperation in the energy sector,” she said.

The official underlined that the most important thing is for Moldova to have a powerful pro-European government.
