The Ministry of Education, Culture and Research named judoka Victor Sterpu and wrestler Anastasia Nikita the best athletes of 2020. Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Laureates Gala wasn’t held, IPN reports.
Anastasia Nikita won the title the second year in a row. In 2020, she became European champion and won gold at the World Cup. “It is the best year in my career. I’m glad I managed to win two gold medals. It is a good result for me. I hope I will continue to gladden the Republic of Moldova with nice results,” said the 21-year-old wrestler.
This year for Victor Sterpu was also the best in his career. The judoka aged 21 won gold at the Seniors European Championships and also at the Under 23 European Championships. “This year brought a joy to me, but I would be gladder if I mount the winner’s rostrum at the Olympic Games,” stated Victor Sterpu.
Wrestler Irina Rîngaci is the “Revelation of the Year”. At the last World Cup, the 19-year-old athlete won silver. Tudor Cîrlan and Valeriu Duminică were named the best coaches.
