Victor Ponta: Romania will stop supporting Moldova financially if pro-European course is changed

Romania will not provide the loan of €150 million to Moldova if an anti-European pro-Russian government is installed in Chisinau, Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta said in a program on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

“We will certainly annul the agreement. Nobody obliges us. It is our right. The first tranche will be disbursed when we receive a report on the completion of the negotiations with the IMF, while the second – after an accord is signed with the IMF. Romania remained the only supporter of Moldova,” said the head of the Romanian Cabinet.

Though he admitted that there is a risk for the Strelet Government to be dismissed, Victor Ponta expressed his confidence that the censure motion that the Party of Socialists intends to submit would not be adopted. “I think everything will be fine. We have direct relations with a number of politicians from Chisinau, including Marian Lupu and Mihai Ghimpu. I also spoke with Iurie Leanca. Leanca will not vote alongside the Socialists,” said the Romanian Premier.

Victor Ponta considers there is now no alternative to the current coalition governing Moldova. “The chaos is the only alternative. Let’s remember the situation of several years ago, when the PCRM ruled in Moldova. Our message is very clear – we support the pro-European coalition, but it must remain pro-European, pro-Romanian and must implement reforms,” he stated, addressing the Moldovan political class.
