Victor Ponta: Romania continues to support Moldova in European integration process

“Romania will continue to support Moldova in the European integration process because it considers that this process is an opportunity to transform the border that has divided the two countries during two centuries into a ‘symbolic’ one,” Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta says in a message transmitted on the occasion of 200 years of the annexation of the eastern part of Moldova to the Tsarist Empire, Mediafax reports on its website, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. “The consequences of this act and their political and social effects remain dominant in the existence of the two states – Romania and Moldova. The separation imposed by a border created by the political effort of the great powers of the epoch led to the division of the families, common traditions, language and culture into two. On multiple occasions, these divisions generated political tensions in both societies, fueled political extremism and favored the abandonment of wise policies and arguments in favor of momentary benefits and ideological passions,” said the Romanian Premier. Victor Ponta stressed that the European integration is a project that implies major political efforts, difficult reforms and radical social transformations, but is yet an opportunity for Romania and Moldova to make the border between them ‘symbolic’, when Moldova becomes part of the EU.
