Victor Ponta: Romania and EU countries from region support Moldova’s European course

Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta said that Romania and the EU countries from the region support the European and democratic course of Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine. He made the statement in an informal meeting held in the Danube Delta, which was attended by Prime Minister Iurie Leanca and the Premiers of Georgia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Serbia, at the invitation of the Romanian head of Government, IPN reports.

According to the Government’s press service, the meeting centered on topical subjects from the European and regional agendas, especially concerning the eastern neighborhood, the preparations for the signing of the Association Agreement with Moldova and Georgia on June 27, and the steps that will be taken to implement the provisions of these documents.

The Moldovan Premier voiced hope that the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU will bring benefits to the country. “It is an opportunity for modernizing Moldova, Moldovan society, the political institutions and the economy of Moldova. For example, the Free Trade Area will bring palpable advantages. We must make effort to prepare the economy and our entrepreneurs so that when we put the Free Trade Agreement into practice on a temporary basis, and this will happen in three-four months, we are ready to benefit from the new commercial regime and to make use of all the advantages,” said Iurie Leanca.

The participants in the meeting held in Tulcea this weekend agreed to coordinate the positions, to discuss the recent developments within the Eastern Partnership and the specific ways in which the EU member states will support the European course of the partner states.
