Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Victor Osipov welcomed the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s intention to help Moldova settle the Transnistrian conflict. He made such statements in the program “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.
Osipov said Ukraine really wants the Transnistrian dispute to be resolved. “Petro Poroshenko, when he was foreign minister of Ukraine, also took many steps in this direction. We will see what happens when we sit at the negotiating table. Anyway, the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict depends first of all on us,” he stated.
The Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration denied the assertions that the 5+2 format of the talks that includes Ukraine is no longer efficient. “It is a very good format, but we haven’t yet managed to reach an agreement and settle this conflict. Things have been stagnant,” said Victor Osipov.
In the same program, Victor Chirila, executive director of the Foreign Policy Association, said Ukraine has sufficient instruments to influence Tiraspol to come closer to Chisinau. “Ukraine has a common border with Transnistria. A number of Transnistrian officials, including Yevgheny Shevchuk, studied in Ukraine. Also, Transnistrian businessmen use the Ukrainian ports,” he argued.
On March 17, President Petro Poroshenko announced that he and his Romania counterpart Klaus Iohannis agreed to do their utmost to see Transnistria reintegrated into Moldova.
