Victor Micu reelected president of Superior Council of Magistracy

Victor Micu was reelected president of the Superior Council of Magistracy for a four-year term on January 23. He was the only candidate who took part in the contest to fill the post and was voted by 11 members of the Council, IPN reports.

Victor Micu voiced hope that he will further have very good cooperation relations with the Council members so as to consolidate the judicial system, strengthen the independence of justice and do so that the people change their attitude to the system.

Victor Micu was named president of the Superior Council of Magistracy on June 17, 2014. Last October, he was re-confirmed so that he continued to form part of the Council. Victor Micu also serves as a judge at the Supreme Court of Justice.

Among the duties of the Superior Council of Magistracy are to organize and ensure the functioning and independence of the judicial system of the Republic of Moldova, to organize the training of judges and secretary personnel of courts of law, to ensure the observance of judicial discipline and ethics, to administer the courts of law, etc.

The president of the Supreme Court of Justice, minister of justice and prosecutor general are ex-officio members of the Superior Council of Magistracy. Six members from among judges, including two substitute members, are chosen by secret vote by the General Assembly of Judges. Another three members of the Council are chosen by Parliament from among law professors by a majority of votes.
