The president of the Supreme Council of Magistracy Victor Micu denies the accusations that the judicial system is fully affected by corruption, while the institution he heads does nothing to reform the system. At the same time, Vlad Gribincea, director of the Legal Resources Center of Moldova, said the system is affected by a number of shortcomings that have a negative impact on the legal system. The issue was developed in the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.
“The judicial system changes permanently and renews itself. Over 80 judges resigned and these were replaced by more than 70 young judges with a new mentality. There is yet a general perception about corruption in the system. This is also due to the heavy workload of the judiciary. Last year the courts of law examined over 480,000 cases. Given that a case involves at least two sides and the court can rule in favor of only one of these, it’s clear why a larger part of the population is dissatisfied with the work of the courts. The judge cannot decide in favor of all the sides involved in a lawsuit,” stated Micu.
He also said that the Supreme Council of Magistracy does everything possible to clean up the system. The dismissal of a judge who endangered Moldova’s membership of the Green Card international system by his judgment is the most recent conclusive example. But the Council cannot discharge the judges for any mistake made.
Vlad Gribincea, director of the Legal Resources Center of Moldova, said the system is affected by a number of drawbacks that have a negative impact on justice. “There is no judicial practice. Different decisions are made on similar cases. Not only once the judges suspended the work of important institutions, jeopardizing thus particular areas,” he stated.
