Victims of violence will be able to provide explanations in absence of abuser

The MPs gave a first reading to a bill designed to ensure the respect for the rights of victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence. This provides that the victims will be able to provide explanations in friendly conditions, in the absence of the suspected person, IPN reports.

In accordance with the bill, the victims will benefit from intimacy and protection of personal image, from medical services, post-traumatic psychological assistance and counseling for recovering physically and psychosocially.

The legislative proposal was drafted by the Ministry of Justice. It stipulates that the Penal Code needs to be amended so as to keep criminal liability following reconciliation between the victim and the offender. This way, the responsible bodies will have to investigate the possible offense proactively so as to collect evidence and make sure that prosecution is possible even if the victim withdraws the complaint.

The bill is to be given a final reading by Parliament.
