Victims of violence and trafficking from northern Moldova helped to reintegrate
After organizing press tours to centers that provide psychological and social assistance to victims of human trafficking and domestic violence in Causeni, Drochia, and Vulcanesti, the Association of Independent Press (API) held a press tour to the Resource Center “Honor and Rights of the Contemporary Woman” based in Balti town.
API program coordinator Irina Lazur has told Info-Prim Neo that the Balti center offers psychological, social and legal assistance to women and girls. The persons who seek aid at the center are also given advice on employment. “If somebody wants to learn a job, but does not have resources to do training courses, the center helps them to attend these courses. Afterward, the persons are helped to find a job in the municipality of Balti as there are many companies here,” she said.
Besides training, the center provides psychological assistance to the women who worked abroad for a long period and encounter problems in reintegrating, and to victims of domestic violence and trafficking in persons. The victims are identified in cooperation with the local law enforcement bodies.
According to the program coordinator, the Resource Center “Honor and Rights of the Contemporary Woman” has worked for three years and in the period provided aid to over 500 persons, not only from the municipality of Balti, but also from other northern districts of the country.
Irina Lazur said the monitoring carried out by the API showed that the press tours are necessary as the journalists often address the cases of domestic violence and human trafficking as sensations. Many articles do not sensitize the public opinion and do not contribute to preventing such phenomena. On the contrary, they have a negative impact on the victims. “It is important to promote the rights of the victims of human trafficking and domestic violence so that we prevent these phenomena,” said the coordinator.
The event was organized by the API within the project “Protection and Empowerment of Victims of Human Trafficking and Domestic Violence in Moldova”, which is implemented by the United Nations Development Program, the United Nations Population Fund, the International Organization for Migration Mission to Moldova, and the OSCE Mission to Moldova. The project is financed by the Government of Japan and the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security.
