Victims of Stalinist deportations of 6 July 1949 are commemorated

The city authorities participated on Friday, July 6, in a commemoration meeting of the victims of Stalinist regime, on the occasion of the 58th anniversary of the large-scale deportations organised in 1949. In the square of the Chisinau Railway Station, where 58 yeas ago 300 wagons loaded with people set off for Siberia or Kazakhstan, several hundreds of persons, including victims of the Stalinist repressions, their relatives, as well as representatives of the civil society and of the political parties have come together to commemorate the victims. A group of priests from “Sfanta Teodora de la Sihla” Church, headed by farther Ion Ciuntu, have officiated a memorial mass. According to Valentina Sturza, head of the Association of former deportees and political prisoners of Moldova, as a result of two deportation waves, 1941 and 1949, “hundreds of persons were deported, the best people of country’s cities, towns and villages, the cream of intelligentsia”. According to Valentina Sturza, the consequences of the deportations will still be felt long time in the future. He expressed his regret about the fact that the Parliament did not pass a special law to give back the goods or pay the damages to the deportees. Attending the commemoration meeting of the deported victims, Chisinau Mayor General Dorin Chirtoaca said that the public authorities did not honour their moral commitment in front of the victims of the two deportation waves. “The Chisinau City Hall has to erect a monument in memory of the victims of Stalinist deportations”, Dorin Chirtoaca said, emphasising the fact that the municipal authorities will contribute by all means to fully reinstate these persons. At the end of last year, the Chisinau Municipal Council announced a contest to erect the sculptural complex “In Memory of the Victims of the Stalinist Regime”. The monument is planned to be erected in front of the Railway Station. At present, there are several concepts of the sculptural composition displayed in the Round Hall of the City Hall, and the jury of the contest will name the winner of the contest in the near future. On 6 July 1949, 11280 families were deported from Moldova, which constitutes over 40850 persons.
