Victims of Holocaust commemorated in Chisinau

The Jewish community of Moldova on January 27 staged a meeting-requiem within which dozens of people came together to lay flowers at the Monument to Victims of the Holocaust located in Chisinau and to commemorate thus the Jews killed in the Nazi concentration camps, IPN reports.

Deputy head of the Jewish community Garri Galanter said in the event that the Holocaust is an immense tragedy of the 20th century and on this day they commemorate the 6 million victims who were subject to atrocious cruelty and killed en masse. All the coming generations must know about these events so as to avoid such tragedies in the future.

First secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel Mark Basin said the Holocaust represents the mass killing of the Jews. Seventy years ago, on January 27, there was freed the largest and the most horrible death camp, where the victims were ill-treated and killed.

A woman victim of the Holocaust said that she was four in that period and managed to survive owing to a woman who took her away from the settlement where she was. She remembers how she endured cold, famine and misery.

Another victim said he was a child, but cannot forget the mistreatment they went through. The man related that they had to sleep in stables in cold, but survived because his parents were tailors and the gendarmes needed them to make them clothes.

On January 27, 1945, the survivors of the camp Auschwitz were set free by the Soviet troops. The UN General Assembly declared January 27 as the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. On this day the people all over the world commemorate the 6 million Jews and the people of other nationalities who died in concentration camps and ghettos.
