Victims of Afghanistan war remembered in Chisinau

The victims of the war that took place in Afghanistan in 1979-1989 were commemorated in Chisinau on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance of those Killed in the War in Afghanistan. The event to mark the 27th anniversary of the pull out of the Soviet troops from this country involved war veterans, relatives of those killed in battle and representatives of the government. The people laid flowers at the Memorial Complex “In Memory of the Sons of Motherland”, IPN reports.

In the commemoration event, the head of the Union of Afghan War Veterans Mihail Mocan said this day represents the end of war for the veterans. “The soldiers from Moldova had to go through that war to suffer injuries and to lose comrades. A number of 301 Moldovan soldiers died in the line of duty in Afghanistan. Four went missing, while hundreds remained invalid,” he stated.

In the festivity, Prime Minister Pavel Filip said it is important not to forget this tragic event in the history of our country and to commemorate its victims.

“The war in Afghanistan is a controversial chapter in the history, but I’m confident that time will not weaken the heroism and courage of these soldiers. The Government I head will do its best for their deeds not to be forgotten and we will make sure that the dead soldiers are remembered, while those who are alive have decent living conditions,” stated Pavel Filip.

Those attending the event observed a minute’s silence in memory of those who died in the war in Afghanistan. About 12,500 Moldovans took part in this war, with over 300 of them being killed.
