A group of veterans who took part in the war for defending the independence and territorial integrity of Moldova welcomed the Moldovan-Ukrainian agreement on joint border control that was signed by Prime Ministers Pavel Filip and Volodimir Groisman last week. In a news conference at IPN, the veterans presented a public statement saying that an internationally recognized common border with joint control at checkpoints is a guarantee of peace and security.
“The given agreement ensures regional security and the respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova and inviolability of state borders. In this connection, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, both from the left and rights sides of the Nistru, can travel freely because the document defines new forms of interaction between border control institutions with a view to simplifying the formalities and bureaucratic procedures. At the same time, the agreement brings benefits to business entities owing to the swift customs and border procedures applying to freight,” Alexandru Popescu, a member of the Association “Faith to the Motherland”, said, reading the statement.
This also says that the war veterans welcome the fact that after 25 of independence, control will be ensured at the eastern border of the state that is recognized by the international institutions and partner states. “We note that in 1992 we struggled for our state’s independence and territorial integrity, for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova to be able to ensure in concert the democratic development of our state. We now have a common inviolable border and our hopes to have an integral and democratic state with free people sure of the future come closer,” stated Alexandru Popescu.
Gennady Cosovan, chairman of the Association “Faith to the Motherland”, said the signing of this agreement is an event of historical importance, but some started to speculate on it with the aim of destabilizing the situation in the country. Everyone knows that contraband was smuggled through the Transnistrian region and trafficking in human beings, drugs and stolen cars flourished there, this segment being a black hole. The signing of the agreement is a first step towards saying NO to trafficking, smuggling and organized crime.
The veterans reiterated their support for the efforts made by the Government to peacefully settle the Transnistrian conflict, by identifying a viable solution in the 5+2 format talks, by respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova and offering a special status to the Transnistrian region. They also stated their support for the executive’s demand to unconditionally pull out the Russian troops from Moldova’s territory.
