Veterans partly dismantle 'illegal' house, promise to return

A group of Nistru war veterans today razed one level of a private house which they say is illegally being built near the monument to a fallen war hero. They agreed to leave the site not until they received assurances from City Hall officials that the demolition would be further carried out by municipal authorities. The veterans promised to return to the site on Monday to check if the deal is respected. “We spoke on the phone with Deputy Mayor Nistor Grozavu, who assured us that City Hall workers would carry on with the demolition on Monday. Now we intend to gather 500 men to check everything is going according to plan”, war veteran Valeriu Ciobanu told Info-Prim Neo. When the veterans came to the site wielding crowbars and other crude tools, the owners of the house under construction tried desperately to resist, reportedly throwing stones at the veterans and setting a dog on them. Police limited their intervention to making sure there were no direct clashes. -- {See also} [Nistru war veterans storm construction site near memorial stone]
