Veterans lose their confidence in Commander-in-chief

The veterans who fought in 1992 in the military conflict on the Nistru state they lose their confidence in the Commander-in-chief, who now is Vladimir Voronin. They explain their attitude by the fact that the authorities “divide the veterans into “ours” and “yours.” “Many requests on giving state distinctions to the veterans of the 1992 war have been ignored, while they are distributed on the basis of the principle of personal devotion or allegiance to the ruling party,” Eduard Maican, the president of the National Union of Independence War Veterans said at a news conference hosted by by Info-Prim Neo on Friday, December 26. The veterans declare themselves troubled by “more and more cases of persecuting many war veterans.” Eduard Maican said that the Ministry of Internal Affairs sent policemen to several recent reunions of veterans “to supervise if certain measures are to be organized.” The veterans have also condemned the authorities’ intention to deprive a tv station of its license, to impede the public meetings and the Government’s attitude about Chisinau mayor Dorin Chirtoaca. Asked, who could be the person who orders the controversial behavior of the police as to the Chisinau City Hall, Eduard Maican said: “In Moldova all is made according to one man’s interest and we know who this man is,” hinting at president Voronin. “All the instructions for what happens in Chisinau run counter the national and international legislation. The Chisinau mayor is the public authority which decides where should the Christmas Tree be erected in Chisinau, the measures that must be unfolded, and the police has a single duty: maintaining the public order,” the veterans‘ leader said. Lately, the National Union of Independence War Veterans offered the authorities many demands referring to improving the registry of the war veterans, simplifying the procedure of granting preferential credits, providing medical attendance and establishing a museum. “Unfortunately, the situation has worsened. Granting the preferential credits has been stopped, and the work of the commission which issues the veterans’ identity cards was stopped two years ago. No representative of the veterans has been included into the commission,” Eduard Maican said. “Such a discriminatory attitude toward the war veterans is fed by the instructions given by the heads of the central administration, specifically from the ministries of force,” reads a release of the Union. Eduard Maican also said that the association is updating its lists of members, who reach 8,500 at present.
