Venice Commission experts on visit to Chisinau

A team of experts of the Venice Commission came to Chisinau on a two-day visit at the invitation of the Ministry of Justice. The experts had a meeting with acting Minister of Justice Oleg Efrim, with whom they discussed aspects of the bill on the reformation of the prosecution service, which was submitted to the Commission for examination last November.

Contacted by IPN, the head of the press service of the Ministry of Justice Olga Cebanu said the experts approved of the bill because it lays emphasis on the independence of the Prosecutor General’s Office and protects it from political influence. The new method of naming the prosecutor general envisions the amendment of the Constitution. The experts of the Venice Commission will meet with the parliamentary groups to find out their opinions on the issue.

The experts welcomed the modification of the type of hierarchical subordination, noting that the bill was drafted taking into account the previous suggestions of the Venice Commission. The official opinion of the Commission will be made public this March.

The experts of the Venice Commission will also have meetings with representatives of the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Supreme Council of Magistrates.
