Venice Commission does not approve of amending Constitution by referendum, PCRM

The Venice Commission is against the amendment of the Constitution by referendum, the Communist Party said, referring to the Commission’s secretary Thomas Markert, Info-Prim Neo reports. Communist MP Grigore Petrenco, who forms part of Moldova’s Delegation to the PACE, Tuesday had a meeting with the European official. He informed Thomas Markert about the political situation in the country and the Government’s intention to hold a constitutional referendum to simplify the procedure for electing the head of state, it is said in a communiqué from the PCRM. Thomas Markert said he knows that the Moldovan political forces intend to ask the Venice Commission to provide expert advice on the planned referendum. The Communist lawmaker voiced hope that the consultative body of the Council of Europe will not become involved in the political combinations of the current administration that wants to remain in power at all costs, according to him.
