Vendors threaten to stage protests if banned from selling near schools

A number of companies that set up retail outlets near schools threaten to mount protests. They assert the authorities did them an injustice when they banned the sale of products that are not recommended for children within an area of 100 meters of schools, Info-Prim Neo reports. Petru Cavcaliu, who owns a shop situated near “Mihai Viteazu” Lyceum in Centru district, told a news conference that only 2-3% of the buyers are students of the education institution. But, given that the law prohibits the sale of products that are not recommended for children within 100 meters of schools, these products are no longer sold in the shops and the grownups cannot buy them either. Petru Cavcaliu said that this law does not stop the students. If they do not find the products they want near the school, they go further. Thus, they expose themselves to other risks when crossing the street, are late for classes, etc. Ion Volosatyi, director of a Limited Liability Company who has a stall near “Gheorghe Asachi” Lyceum in Centru district, said the list of products compiled by the Ministry of Health is unclear. Some of the products that are not recommended for children, according to the Ministry, can be found in school eateries, including sausages, pressed cheese, cookies and others. Vasile Panzaru said the sale of the given products should be banned only to children, regardless of the location of the shop. In order to make sure that the law is not broken, the fines can be increased. A law that prohibits the sale of food products with a high contents of sugar, fats and salt in shops situated within 100 meters of schools came into force on September 20. The Ministry of Health announced it will later comment on the statements made by the vendors.
