The authorities said the national roads are passable, but the traffic conditions are difficult. Owing to the weather conditions, about 140 students didn’t get to classes on March 19 after five school bus routes were cancelled. Rescuers performed 32 operations to tow away vehicles on different road sections.
The Ministry of Education, Culture and Research said the five school bus routes in the districts of Calarasi, Orhei, Soroca and Ungheni were suspended owing to the snowy roads and to defects in units of transport.
Press officer of the General Inspectorate for Emergencies Liliana Puscasu has told IPN that the situation started to worsen on March 18, starting with 7pm, when the number of vehicles blocked on roads started to increase. Even if there were no impassable roads, there were cases when the units of transport skidded off the roadway. The 32 unblocked units of transport included six ambulances.
The General Inspectorate for Emergencies said there are now no communities disconnected from the power supply.
The Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure said all the national roads were passable in the morning of March 19, but there is ice on the roads. The anti-icing works continue all over the country. The more difficult road sections are monitored permanently so as to intervene in emergencies.
According to weather forecasters, the yellow code advisory for sleet, snow and high winds is still in force. Therefore, the authorities recommend the drivers, especially those who work on regular international and inter-district road transport routes, to travel at low speed in communities and outside them, to keep a longer distance between vehicles so as to manage to brake and to be attentive to road signs.
