Veaceslav Untila becomes MAE leader

The European Action Movement (MAE) has a new leader. The third congress of the party held on Sunday, January 24, elected MP Veaceslav Untila, who defected recently from the Moldova Noastra Alliance (AMN), as president of the party, Info-Prim Neo reports. The founder of the MAE Anatol Petrencu was elected as first vice president. Ten persons were voted in as vice presidents. These are: Mariana Taranu, Nicolae Rosca, Zoia Jalba, Andrei Pavaloi, Marin Bulgaru, Alexandru Gargan, Valeriu Muntean and three former members of the AMN – Iurie Colesnic, Gheorghe Vasilache and Sergiu Baltag. The former first vice president of the party Ion Neagu was elected as secretary of the MAE. Most of the about 900 delegates to the congress voted for Veaceslav Untila, 12 persons voted against, while 34 abstained. “Mister Untila, you will lead a party the second time. We hope you will not repeat the mistakes that you committed while working with the AMN,” Gheorghe Ciobanu, an activist of the MAE from Leova district, said before the new president was elected. Iurie Tanase, a representative of the MAE from Soroca, said Anatol Petrencu should remain leader of the party. “Veaceslav Untila has now to prove that he came to the MAE not because he wants to be a leader, but because he aims to strengthen this party. Mister Petrencu should tell us if he assumes responsibility towards the people with whom he founded the party,” Tanase said. “It is an honor to have Veaceslav Untila among us. The AMN now includes two district heads (of Leova and Cahul – e.n.) and two MPs (Untila and Colesnic – e.n.), who had been members of the AMN. In order to develop, we must have courage to promote new persons,” said Anatol Petrencu. “This is a chance for the party. I think after this congress, new people will join the MAE. We will strengthen the party by autumn so as to be ready to take part in possible elections and achieve better results.” “We will lay emphasis on principles. Our team will not include political profiteers. We will take steps to gradually achieve our objectives and are convinced that the MAE will soon become one of the major players on the national political arena,” said Veaceslav Untila. He also said that he will focus on three main goals: to promote the local leaders, to use new electoral technologies and to strengthen the MAE's team. Veaceslav Untila told the reporters that he does not have time for regrets after leaving the AMN as he now has to implement the political project that he planned together with Anatol Petrencu. The MAE aims to attract new Liberal extra-parliamentary parties and to create a strong right force together. The MAE's congress adopted two resolutions: on the party's entry into the European People's Party, and on the unification of the extra-parliamentary democratic forces of Moldova.
