The incumbent mayor of Chisinau, Veaceslav Iordan, is the official candidate of the Communists Party (CP) for the position of mayor general of the municipality in the elections scheduled for June. This information was confirmed to Info-Prim Neo by secretary executive of the CP Central Committee Victor Stepaniuc. Iordan’s candidacy of was officially fielded at Thursday’s meeting of the Central Committee. Early this month, sources that chose to remain anonymous told Info Prim Neo that Iordan has been CP’s option for some time. According to them, the final consultations started on April 1. The candidacy of Iordan was examined together with MP Vasile Tarlev’s and that of the minister of Local Public Administration Vitalie Vrabie The agency didn’t manage to obtain Iordan’s confirmation on this issue, as he left on Friday morning for Istanbul to attend the IV of the World Mayors’ Summit, held from April 12 to 15. The general local election will be held on June 3, 2007. Seven political parties have fielded candidates for the Mayoral race to date.
