Chairman of the Party “Democracy at Home” (PDA) Vasile Costiuc said the unionist parties are pro-European by definition because the Union with Romania means integration into the EU, but the pro-European parties during the past few years have been less European and contributed to the diminution of people’s confidence in the European course by non-European behavior. The opinion was stated in the public debate “Starting positions of political parties and potential independent candidates on unionist platform before an electoral year”, which was the 82nd installment of the series “Developing political culture by public debates”, staged by IPN News Agency.
Speaking about the mixed electoral system, Vasile Costiuc said this from the start puts the unionist parties in a position of inferiority. “I’m not sure which of the parties or candidates will win in a constituency if they openly speak about the rapprochement with Romania. We yet know very well that our opponents have administrative, media and financial resources that they can use. If changes are not made to the legislation to introduce the runoff, the chance that we will have MPs elected in constituencies will be slim even if a unionist bloc is created,” stated the politician.
‘”I wanted to see in the appearance of Traian Basescu in Chisinau a factor that would have re-launched the national liberation movement that was successfully discredited by those who headed this in the 1990s.”
The leader of the PDA considers the unionist parties should now go and talk to the people about the benefits of an eventual union. Namely this procedure can be one of the few instruments that can be applied successfully in this case. “Shor’s cards or the media centers that brainwash us every day are another danger. If you go to a person and explain to this that we took no step forward during 27 years and the reunion is the only possibility of overcoming this situation, it will be more efficient. I think the success resides in efficient, open, sincere communication and in the quality of leaders who will speak to the people. Only this way can we achieve the better results shown now by polls,” he stated.
Vasile Costiuc said the party he represents does not have salvation scenarios for 2018, but it would be efficient to have discussions in an extended format during the next few months, including with those who say they are pro-European.
The public debate “Starting position of political parties and potential independent candidates on unionist platform before an electoral year” is the 82nd installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are organized with support from the Hanns Seidel Foundation of Germany.
The next debate entitled “Starting position of political parties and potential independent candidates before an electoral year” will take place in the conference hall of IPN News Agency on November 27, starting at 2pm. This will involve representatives of the Eurasian dimension of the political landscape.
