The National Library hosted the launch of the book “Blat to billions” signed by ex-minister, diplomat and scientist Vasile Bumacov. The volume is about the terrible impact of the implementation of the Marxist-Leninist and Stalinist theories on the individual and societies in the USSR. The author depicted examples from his own life during the Communist and post-Communist periods so as to more accessibly describe the appearance of Homo Sovieticus and the metamorphosis that takes place in society and in the minds of those who can be influenced and are uninformed, IPN reports.
Vasile Bumacov had worked on the book for two years, while being in Japan. He said he was inspired by Japanese society, the behavior and miracle they Japanese people managed to work after World War II, when the state was fully devastated. He realized how important it was for society to be united, to know what it wants and to accept assistance from other countries.
The author said he wanted to highlight the problems, but mostly aimed to restore the country’s reputation because not all in our country are thieves of billions from the state treasury or are nostalgic for the Soviet Union, as they consider abroad.
Historian Anatol Țăranu, political commentator, said it is a very interesting book about the life of a successful Bessarabian who achieved results in a number of areas. “It is a book in English and this opens the Republic of Moldova to the public across the world. I think this book will find a place of honor in the gallery of the works about the Republic of Moldova and its people,” stated Anatol Țăranu.
Ion Păduraru, ex-minister, noted that such books are needed, especially because the author has very good training in the field of management and has a very developed sense of humor and he very well depicted aspects of the post-Soviet realities. “I believe it will be interesting for the readers to see or even reassess their own views of the given realities through the angle proposed by the author,” he said.
Academician Nicolae Dabija, writer, scriptwriter, editor, said that at a book launch in Spain, a writer remembered the Republic of Moldova as a state where a US$ 1 billion was stolen. He felt proud as he realized that our country is known, but then thought that we have our own values and not the thieves and corrupt persons should make us known abroad. As long as corruption flourishes, we do not have any chance to become an emancipated state, a country that can be called country.
National Library vice director Veronica Borș said this launch is an important event also because the author is a former minister and ambassador. “We hope a lot that the users of the library will study this valuable book,” she noted.
The book is written in English and is to appear in Romanian in the nearest future.
