Vanu Jereghi: Measures to fight corruption must not be selective

The state should take more measures to fight corruption and these should not be selective, as until now, stated the executive director of the Moldovan Institute for Human Rights (IDOM) Vanu Jereghi. Asked by IPN about the human rights priorities in 2017, he said the actions should cover the whole system, while the biggest expectations are related to the fight against corruption.

According to Vanu Jereghi, the state, when it undertakes to do something at international level, must think very well if it has capacities to fulfill the commitments as Moldova is at the top when it is about the ratification of international documents and at the bottom when it is about their implementation.

“Next year the people should have a system that will think about them, that will be effective and receptive to the problems related to human rights. When we have very good laws, and the laws are good indeed, the state should work out effective mechanisms for implementing these, especially in the area of human rights where there are serious shortcomings,” stated Vanu Jereghi.

As to the rights of persons in psychiatric hospitals, Vanu Jereghi said a series of actions to improve the situation are taken, but these are not promoted sufficiently fast. “There are visible changes in penitentiaries, but the psychiatric hospitals lag behind. Measures were taken during the past year to deinstitutionalize persons who stayed there their whole life. I want to see changes related to these persons so that they can live with dignity, regardless of their problems,” he stated.

Among the expectations of the penitentiary system, Vanu Jereghi noted the improvement of the detention conditions and de-politicization of the system.
