The Centru branch of the Court of Chisinau on June 15 put off the validation of the seat of the elected mayor of Chisinau municipality Andrei Nastase. The judge argued not all the electoral materials concerning the first round of the new mayoral elections have been brought. Also, the court requested the Chisinau District Electoral Council to state its opinion and say if the election outcome can be validated when the Supreme Court of Justice hasn’t pronounced on a challenge submitted by the Party of Socialists, IPN reports.
The Electoral Council’s secretary Vitalie Miron told the journalists after the hearing that the examination of the case was put off until a definitive judgment is pronounced on the Socialists’ challenge, which is logical according to him.
Dumitru Pavel, lawyer for Andrei Nastase, said the delay is unjustified as the court should have made sure that all the required documents that refer to the first round of voting were present. As to the challenge filed by the Party of Socialists, this refers to the fact that foreign persons were involved in Andrei Nastase’s campaign, but the ordinary court and the appeals court ruled that there was no such a violation. The ten-day period during which the court is to pronounce on the election results expires on June 18.
Alexandru Slusari, deputy chairman of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” that is headed by Andrei Nastase, said they are witnessing a plot staged by the Democratic Party, which controls the justice sector, and the Party of Socialists, which says that they recognize Andrei Nastase’s victory, but simultaneously delay his coming to the City Hall.
Supporters of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” came to the court and demanded that the people’s vote should be respected and that the seat of the elected mayor should be validated. They chanted: “We will not yield!”, “Thieves!”, “Down with the Mafia!”, “We represent the people!”.
