Valery Klimenko: Moldova and Romania will unite only by civil war

The Republic of Moldova and Romania will unite only as a result of a civil war that will be won by pro-unionist forces, the president of the Social-Political Movement “Ravnopravie” Valery Klimenko told a news conference on September 9. Klimenko made the statement in response to certain assertions by Speaker Mihai Ghimpu, which were interpreted by media outlets as expression of the willingness to join Romania. If the minorities have to defend the statehood of Moldova, they could find allies outside, including in Russia, Klimenko said, stressing that they promote the interests of Moldova’s national minorities. Asked if Russia could intervene militarily in such a situation, Klimenko responded that all the means are good when protecting the country’s statehood. He added that Ukraine, Turkey, Bulgaria could also intervene in such a conflict so as to defend their co-nationals living in Moldova. As to the statements that Moldova should withdraw from the CIS and join NATO, which, according to Klimenko, were made by the Liberal-Democratic leader Vlad Filat, the president of the Social-Political Movement “Ravnopravie”said: “The national minorities are in favor of preserving the statehood, sovereignty and independence of Moldova”. According to Klimenko, the Transnistrian conflict would not be solved if such statements are made. He added that the Communists will be responsible if the right-wing forces try to put Filat’s statements into practice. Klimenko suggested that the PCRM should not cooperate with the Alliance for European Integration even if there is a risk of new early elections. “The responsible politicians must run in tens of early elections in order to preserve the country’s borders,” he said.
