Two Liberal-Democratic lawmakers – Valeriu Strelet and Veaceslav Ionita – are investigated in a criminal case. Bogdan Zumbreanu, head of the National Anticorruption Center’s Prosecution Division, has told IPN that the MPs are under investigation for abuse of power. They have not been charged yet.

According to Bogdan Zumbreanu, the materials were gathered during the examination of the case of the former head of the Main State Tax Inspectorate Nicolae Vicol, who is suspected of passive corruption, abuse of power and illegal wiretapping. The two MPs are to be questioned.

Contacted by IPN, Valeriu Strelet said he wasn’t informed that he was investigated in a criminal case either verbally or in written form. “If they inform me and tell me what I am accused of, I will respect all the legal procedures,” he stated. The head of the Liberal-Democratic parliamentary group does not rule out a link with the amendments passed to the Law on the National Anticorruption Center.

Veaceslav Ionita was unavailable for comment.
