Valeriu Strelet: There were no reasons to lease Chisinau Airport

The government created a task force that has 4 weeks to present legal grounds, implementation steps and potential consequences of the termination of the lease agreement for the Chisinau International Airport. After today's meeting of the Cabinet, August 24, Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet said that the task force would be composed of representatives from the Agency of Public Property, the National Anticorruption Center (CNA), the State Chancellery and the Ministries of Justice, Economy and Finance, IPN reports.

An official government decision on the issue will be taken after examining the task group's conclusions. According to Strelet, the preliminary data from CNA shows that the company that took over the the airport isn't investing its own funds, but is using the money from the airport's development tax. Moreover, while there aren't any other external funding sources, the airport's returns are used to fund side projects, such as the Milsami Football Club.

To questions regarding Ilan Shor's involvement, PM Strelet answered that his name doesn't appear in the initial reports and it is up to CNA to decide who must be investigated in this case.

The preliminary data provided by CNA indicates that there were no reasons to lease the airport. At the time of the decision, its economic activity was healthy and profitable and it was on the verge of obtaining a development loan.

The Chisinau International Airport was leased for 49 years to Avia Invest, beginning on November 1, 2013.
