Valeriu Strelet: Referendum on name of official language is a solution

In a polarized and split society as Moldova’s, deciding the name of the official language by referendum is a solution. The attempt to modify the provisions of the Constitution in Parliament would be most certainly doomed to failure, said the head of the Liberal-Democratic parliamentary group Valeriu Strelet, quoted by IPN.

“We consider that the Constitutional Court’s decision is enough. This decision enables the courts of law and the institutions to freely use the term ‘Romanian language’,” said Valeriu Strelet.

On December 5, the Constitutional Court ruled that in case of divergences between the texts of the Declaration of Independence and of the Constitution, the primary text of the Declaration will prevail. This also refers to the country’s official language. The Declaration of Independence says it is the Romanian language, while the Constitution says it is Moldovan, based on the Latin script.
