Valeriu Strelet: EP’s resolution suggests political class must ensure sustainable development
The adoption by the European Parliament of a resolution with its recommendation to offer Moldova the prospect of joining the European Union suggests the political class must treat its historical duty of ensuring the country’s sustainable and fast development through the European integration prospect with all the responsibility, considers the leader of the Liberal-Democratic parliamentary group Valeriu Strelet. He said the political forces should focus on this objective and abandon their temporary ambitions and vainglory so as to stabilize the political situation.
“I think this resolution is an encouraging and mobilizing signal for Moldova. This document contains a number of important landmarks for the future relations between Moldova and the EU. It refers especially to paragraph 49 of the Treaty on European Union, which provides the possibility of joining the EU. It points out the dynamic character of the negotiations on the Association Agreement and of the dialogue on the liberalization of the visa regime. Its adoption shows that Moldova’s efforts in the area of internal reforms and European integration made during the last two years were noticed and approved of,” said Valeriu Strelet.
According to the lawmaker, the European Union encourages the Moldovan authorities to persevere in promoting the European course and confirms that Moldova will further enjoy the support of the European partners on condition that it consistently implements the program of reforms.
“The resolution of the European Parliament shows that a new chance is offered to Moldova through the new “more for more” philosophy of the European Neighborhood Policy and it shouldn’t be missed. I think this is also a warning for the Moldovan political class about the risks of some political players opposing the program of reforms,” said Valeriu Strelet.
The Liberal-Democrat MP anticipated that Moldova will experience decisive moments in the near future, which will concern the short and medium-term development of the reform course. “We count a lot on the responsibility of our partners and the parliamentary opposition in identifying solutions to the constitutional impasse as we must elect the head of state. The Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova will treat this process in strict compliance with the Constitution of Moldova. We are confident that we will obtain the political stability needed by the country and the people,” said Valeriu Strelet.
On September 15, the European Parliament approved its recommendation to the European Council, the European Commission and the European External Action Service to offer Moldova the prospect of joining the EU one day.
