Valeriu Munteanu: Theoretically, Dorin Chirtoaca still can run for Chisinau mayoralty

The mayor general of Chisinau municipality Dorin Chirtoaca, who announced his resignation, from theoretical viewpoint still can run for mayoralty. The decision whether to run or not will be taken within the Liberal Party, the party’s deputy chairman Valeriu Munteanu stated in the talk show “Yellow Code” on 10TV channel, IPN reports.

Valeriu Munteanu said the Liberal Party will identify among its ranks a candidate whose duty will be to win the next mayoral elections in the municipality of Chisinau.

The Liberal heavyweight noted that if Dorin Chirtoaca had tendered his resignation before the referendum on his dismissal held in Chisinau last autumn on the initiative of the Socialists, the budget would have been spared from the spending of 9 million lei on the plebiscite, but the rating of the Party of Socialists would have increased three times and the Socialists would have speculated that Dorin Chirtoaca resigned because he feared them. “This would have had a negative impact including for the upcoming parliamentary elections,” stated Valeriu Munteanu.

According to him, the decision to resign was taken long ago, but was announced only now because they realized that they cannot go on for the reason that the case started against Dorin Chirtoaca is political in character. The decision was not unexpected and the idea of resigning appeared long ago.

On February 16, mayor general of Chisinau municipality Dorin Chirtoaca, who was suspended from post, announced that he decided to vacate his seat in protest at the abuses committed against the capital city and against him.
