Valeriu Munteanu: If I’m elected mayor, I will not tend to occupy seat of MP

The Liberal Party’s candidate in the new mayoral elections in Chisinau municipality Valeriu Munteanu said that if he is elected mayor, he will not tend to occupy the seat of MP after this autumn’s parliamentary elections. He made such a statement in the program “Politics” on TV8 channel, IPN reports.

Valeriu Munteanu said he will take up his duties at the City Hall not for a year, as some leaders do in a move to propel their party in the legislative elections. “I come for the period during which I will be supported by the voters and the inhabitants of Chisinau municipality and for as long as I will be able to move things on. I declare this with overall responsibility,” he stated, noting that he will not tend to become an MP if he wins the mayoralty of Chisinau.

The Liberal candidate said two candidates of the left can never reach the runoffs in the municipality of Chisinau. He referred to the Socialists’ candidate Ion Ceban and to Silvia Radu, who he considers is supported by the Democratic Party. “Silvia Radu is a candidate of the left and the way she speaks and thinks proves this. Undoubtedly, she is a candidate of the left,” he noted.

Vladislav Kulminski, executive director of the Institute for Strategic Initiatives, said several things should be immediately done at the Chisinau City Hall. The structural reform is the first thing as no enterprise can properly function under the current formula. Furthermore, the municipal enterprises should be subject to an audit and many of them should be privatized. Also, transparency should be insured in the processes as this is now absent.

New mayoral elections in Chisinau municipality will take place on May 20.
