Most of the EU member states are in favor of opening accession negotiations with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, but Hungary can block the processes, said the executive director of the Institute for Strategic Initiatives Vadim Pistrinciuc. According to him, Hungary has problems with Ukraine, not with Moldova and this country’s geopolitical game can postpone the start of the accession negotiations both for Kyiv and for Chisinau, IPN reports.

The expert noted that the European Council’s decision about the eventual opening of the accession negotiations with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova is strictly political in character. Hungary can vote against the opening of negotiations.

“The Premier of Hungary Victor Orban, who will also vote in the European Council on the issue of the accession negotiations with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, is angry with Ukraine and intends to vote against. Some analysts say that he does this for Putin to show to the EU that not everyone agrees to unconditionally support Ukraine. Others say that he does this to obtain benefits from the EU as Hungary’s financing packages were blocked owing to the departures from the democratic values. I would be more moderate on this issue. Next week’s decision doesn’t depend on the Republic of Moldova or on the done homework as we did the homework and the European Commission recommended opening the accession negotiations, but it is the European Council’s political decision. Most of the members are in favor, but this “enfant terrible” of the European Union, Victor Orban, is against,” Vadim Pistrinciuc stated in the program “Résumé” on RliveTV channel.

According to him, the decision to open accession negotiations covers both Ukraine and Moldova and is related to the EU’s internal arrangements. Romania, France, Germany support Moldova more than other countries and Ukraine is also backed by some of the countries more than by others. The decision will be collective yet.

The decision to open or not the accession negotiations with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova is to be taken by a unanimous vote in the European Council’s meeting that was set to take place in Brussels on December 14-15.
