USB: A military deal with Russia could sever relations with the West

Save Bessarabia Union (USB) is launching a public warning for the PSRM-ACUM governing coalition against a military agreement with the Russian Federation, which could sever the security cooperation relations with Western partners, IPN reports.

According to a press release disseminated by USB, Defence minister Pavel Voicu’s visit to Moscow is not accidental: "neither his unconstitutional statements that Russia would be Moldova’s ally, nor the invitation of the Russian Defence minister Sergei Soigu to Chisinau on August 24”.

"The visit of John Bolton, security adviser of US president Donald Trump, to Chisinau on August 29, is not a random one either. In his turn, John Bolton comes to Chisinau shortly after the official visit to the US on August 20 of Klaus Iohannis, the president of Romania, who discussed with Donald Trump security issues in our region,” the statement said.

According to USB, Moscow is preparing to sign a military cooperation agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the Russian Federation. " Concluding a military cooperation agreement with the Russian Federation is the red line that the Government of the Republic of Moldova is not allowed to cross as it leads to severing security cooperation relations with its Western partners."

Without revealing the sources in regard to the content of a potential agreement, as such a document could be prepared, USB states that it could have the following provisions: "tactical military cooperation of the National Army of the Republic of Moldova with the Russian Army and sending to training in military educational establishments from the Russian Federation of military staff from the National Army of the Republic of Moldova”.

"If this red line is crossed, then the NATO states and, first of all the USA, and Romania will cease any cooperation with the Republic of Moldova in the field of defence, the consequence being the transformation of the Republic of Moldova into the military protectorate of the Russian Federation," the USB release states.

Recently, Prime Minister Maia Sandu warned Defence Minister Pavel Voicu that he was not empowered to sign official documents with Russian Defence Minister Sergei Soigu, who visited these days the Republic of Moldova. Also recently, the information on the visit to Chisinau of John Bolton, national security adviser of the US President, Donald Trump, was made public.
