USAID to offer equipment for fighting bird flu
United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will donate to Moldova a batch of emergency equipment to fight bird flu. The total value of the donation, which is to be carried out by the end of March, is estimated at USD 34 thousand. The equipment contains a laboratory kit, 2250 sets of personal protection equipment and 40 sets of decontamination.
The donation was the topic of a meeting between the Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Anatolie Gorodenco with the interim head of USAID/Moldova, Michael Burkly.
According to the International Epizooties Office, the virus was registered in 54 countries of the world, the last foci being registered in the countries from Asia, Africa, in Hungary, Russia and Great Britain. The import of poultry coming from the countries having bird flu cases was temporarily halted.
Veterinary Service of Moldova and the Poultry Companies from the countries are on alert, because of the risk of possible bird flu foci. They were endowed with equipment, and disinfectants for fighting the virus in case it appears. The Veterinary Medicien Department collects information every day about the situation related to the bird flu all over the country. The State Veterinary Service together with the local public authorities constantly observe the situation related to the diseased or dead birds, and perform laboratory tests.
Due to the financial support of UNICEF and USAID several courses on the issue of bird flu prevention were organised. The World Bank has also contributed by purchasing protection and disinfection equipment, as well as disinfectant substances. Also, 2 satellite laboratories were installed in Drochia and Cahul raions.
