USAID provides grants to fight human trafficking in Transnistria
Transnistria-based NGOs, with support of the USAID-funded Moldova Citizen Participation Programme, are implementing projects to fight trafficking in human beings in the region.
According to Jeff Whitbeck, project assistant manager, the residents in the Transnistrian region are far from being immune to the threats of trafficking in humans. By supporting NGOs and community activists in Transnistria, the Programme aims to assist their efforts in preventing the negative effects of migration.
The total sum of the grants is approximately $30,000. The planned number of beneficiaries of the anti-trafficking activities will reach 122,000 persons by the end of the project.
The NGO Shag Navstrechu, one of the grant recipients, plans to inform and educate the vulnerable groups. Two other NGOs, Rezonans and Interaction, are carrying out projects in preventing negative effects of migration.
The five-year Moldova Citizen Participation Programme aims to enhance the capacity of citizens throughout Moldova to create tangible and positive change in their own communities through civic activity and democratic practices. The Programme is funded by USAID and implemented by IREX.
