USA Embassy in Chisinau closes the financing of a project regarding the trafficking in women
The USA Embassy in Chisinau announces the closing of the financing of the Project “Centre for Prevention of Trafficking in Women” (CPTW). The project, financed by the USA State Department and coordinated by UNDP Moldova, is implemented by the Association of Women in Legal Careers.
On this occasion, the Centre is organizing, Friday, the 30th of June, the closing conference of this project. At the event will participate representatives of the state structures, of the NGOs and international organizations from the Republic of Moldova and Romania and as well the results of the CPTW and its office-branches for the years 2003-2006 will be presented. The Press Conference will take place at 10 AM, in the Press Hall of “Codru” hotel.
The Centre for Prevention of Trafficking in Women was opened by the Association of Women in Legal Careers in 2001, being focused on preventing human beings trafficking and informing through a net of volunteers. From 2003, the Centre broadened its activity by offering legal assistance to victims. Through the Decision of the National Committee for Fighting Trafficking in Human Beings, from the 10th of November 2003, CPTW was empowered to carry out special trainings for representatives of local public administration and for the members of the local anti-trafficking commission.
According to CPTW representatives, the project contributes to developing mechanisms of strengthening the legal framework and national capacities of respecting and promoting human rights, especially women rights. According to Pamela Hyde Smith, ex-ambassador of USA in Chisinau, when CPTW office-branch in Ungheni was inaugurated in July 2002, the Centre assumed the role of leader in human trafficking fighting, helping hundreds of victims and possible human trafficking victims.
From May 2003 and till June 2006, 3.673 persons have benefited from legal consultations and assistance information offered by specialists in human trafficking problem, and 364 human trafficking victims were represented in 231 penal, civil and administrative cases.
