The United States Embassy welcomes the United Nations Report on Human Rights in the Transnistrian Region of the Republic of Moldova, and shares the concerns raised about serious and continuing human rights violations, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a press release from the Embassy. “As outlined in our annual human rights report, we too have received credible reports of torture, denial of due process, and conditions in Transnistrian detention facilities that do not meet international standards. We join the United Nations in calling for the respect of internationally recognized human rights standards in the Transnistria region,” reads the press release. UN Senior Expert on Human Rights in Transnistria Thomas Hammarberg Thomas Hammarberg described the statements of persons held in the Transnistrian prisons as worrisome. According to him, a large number of detainees said there cases were fabricated and this shows lack of trust in the legal system. The expert said another problem is the too severe punishments. Thomas Hammarberg visited the Transnistrian region within three separate missions in May, September, and November 2012. The report that he presented recently contains 38 recommendations, intended mainly for the Transnistrian authorities, but whose implementation depends on the cooperation with competent international organizations and the Government of Moldova.
