U.S. reaffirms support for Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity

The United States reaffirmed its support for Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity after the congress of deputies of all levels in Tiraspol adopted a resolution to ask Russia for help, IPN reports.

“Given Russia’s increasingly aggressive and destabilizing role in Europe, we are following Russia’s actions in Transdniestria and the broader situation there very closely,” Matthew Miller,  U.S. Department of State spokesman, told RFE/RL’s Moldovan Service.

He urged the Moldovan Government and the de facto authorities in Tiraspol to work together and find solutions to the pressing concerns of communities on both banks of the Nistru.

On February 28, a congress of so-called deputies of all levels was held in Tiraspol and this adopted a resolution invoking pressure, including economic and social one, exerted by the Moldovan authorities. The Transnistrian administration asked the Russian Federation for protection and will also notify the UN Secretary General, the European Parliament and other international institutions.

Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian and the Bureau for Reintegration Policies rejected the statements coming from Tiraspol, describing them as propaganda. The Moldovan authorities remind that the Transnistrian region benefits from the peace, security and economic integration policies with the European Union, which are beneficial to all the citizens.
