U.S. offers money for new image of “Assumption of the Virgin” Church of Causeni

The United States provided US 200,000 worth of grant funding to Moldova for continuing the works to restore and conserve the “Assumption of the Virgin” Church of Causeni town. The announcement was made by U.S. Ambassador James Pettit during a recent visit to the church. Earlier, the U.S. allocated US$ 150,000 for safeguarding and protecting the given church.

Head of Causeni district Nicolae Gorban has told IPN that the first stage of the works to restore the church is underway. The ceiling and lateral walls of the church are being painted and the works will be then suspended, until next March-April. Later, the paintings will be checked to see if they are stable and have no fissures or air bubbles.

“If the works go well, they will be continued next spring. The second stage will consist in the removal of the old roof and the installation of a dome. The project was planned for a four-year period,” said Nicolae Gorban.

According to him, the “Assumption of the Virgin” Church of Causeni was built in the 16th-17th centuries. It was in a very bad state of repair.
